with No Comments

Castle on a hill.

Castle Valkenburg is the only castle in the Netherlands build on a hill. The Netherlands is mostly a flat country, but in Limburg you have some hills. Around 1075 the first castle was built on this spot for Gozewijn of Valkenburg. After 50 years it was raised to the ground by Bouwdewijn of Leuven. Gozewijn II did built another castle on this spot. In 1465 Vakenburg got sieged again by Luik. This time the castle walls resisted the assaults and for the rest of the Middle Ages it was not atacked again.
