Soesterberg, NATO air base – The Netherlands

World War II.

The first military flights in the Netherlands took place in the early years of the 20th century on this base. It remained a small air base until the Second World War. The Germans upgraded it and renamed it Fliegerhorst Soesterberg’Fliegerhorst Soesterberg was used in the Battle of England and because of this it was bombed heavily by the Allied air forces.

Cold war.

During the Cold War the Netherlands invited the US army to support its defenses against the CCCP. The United States sent the 322 Squadron (the Hawker Hunters).
Most of the buildings were built during this time. The Royal Dutch Air Force still uses this site as a memorial site for pilots that have died in the line of duty.
