The bloody history of Castle Brederode

The name Brederode is from the forest nearby that is named “Brede Roede”. This castle is build around 1300 to protect the interests of the lord of Brederode and it was needed because during the “hoekse and kabeljauwse twisten” war it was besieged in 1351. After the castle surrendered, it was so damaged it was raised to the ground. In 1357 it was rebuilt and partly destroyed by the Kabeljauwen in 1426. It finally was restored in 1464, but in 1492 it was sacked by German soldiers. In 1573, it was occupied by Spanish soldiers, sacked and put to fire. It had already lost his military value, and nobody has tried to restore it since.
