Birkenau.
In the Autumn of 1941, 10,000 Soviet prisoners of war arrived at the site of Auschwitz 2 Birkenau. Their job was to build the concentration camp. During the winter most of them died.
Over the next years more than 1.1 million people died here. Most of them where Jewish. Because it was not only a death camp, some survivors were able to tell what happened here.
On 27 January 1944 Auschwitz was liberated. After the war Auschwitz became the symbol of the Holocaust.
